Effectrode Phaseomatic Vacuum Tube Phaser

“There’s a huge amount of variation in what this effect can do.” – Guitar Buyer Magazine

DESCRIPTION

On more subtle settings it adds life and movement to your sound that’s so natural and un-processed you’ll forget it’s there – until you press the bypass switch. Moving on to the other extreme, this powerful tone machine capably produces deep “tunnel” phasing and intense jet plane whooshing textural effects that predominated music in the mid 70′s. And finally, the Phaseomatic Deluxe truly excels in generating a host of cosmic & spacious sound effects heard on many B-rated 1950′s sci-fi movie soundtracks.

FEATURES

  • All Tube: This totally unique phaser pedal uses vacuum tubes and photo-resistors to create the phasing effect – Pure tube signal processing!
  • Powerful Mixed-Wave Modulator: Advanced L.F.O. technology allows that phase sweep to be driven with triangle (linear), sine, pseudo-square (vibe), rise, fall and stepped wave shapes in thirds, fourth, fifths, sixths and sevenths.
  • “Frozen Sweep” Capability: The L.F.O. is capable of super-slow 1/40Hz modulation rates to generate rich and complex comb filter effects. That’s a sweep rate of 40 seconds! If this isn’t slow enough then a constant output mode allows the comb notches to be “frozen” to create hollow sounding acoustic timbres.
  • C.V. Input For external control from a voltage source or EV-5 expression pedal for lots of phase modulation possibilities. Frozen notches can be moved up and down. This action can be used in conjunction with the internal L.F.O. of the Phaseomatic for articulate and beautiful sweep effects.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago 1510 knobs custom manufactured for Effectrode in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds.
  • Tangerine LEDs pulsate with modulation speed for visual song tempo matching.
  • Includes 12V Wall-wart Power Supply High quality low-noise switched mode 12VDC at 1.5A wall-wart compatible with all our pedals. Accepts 100V to 240VAC mains input and comes with different mains outlet adaptor plugs, so there is always a plug that fits the country that you are playing in.

Effectrode Delta-Trem Tube Tremolo

“…sounds bigger and deeper in a very tubey way compared to just about anything else you can step on.If distortion can be described as ‘beautiful’, this is it.” – The ToneQuest Report

DESCRIPTION

This is accomplished by using a ‘Raysistor’, a unique component made up from a filament lamp and photo-cell, in conjunction with a vacuum tube signal path – twice for stereo! This gives an exceptionally warm and musical tremolo effect that blends well with clean and overdriven guitar sounds. The dual signal path allows the pedal to operate in mono tremolo mode into a single amp or stereo where the sound is ping-ponged between two amps for a huge, spacious tone.

Circuit operation is extremely quiet with none of the audible “ticking” often associated with tube amp tremolo. The Delta-Trem features a configurable low frequency oscillator that accurately reproduces the classic deep sine wave throb found on early Fender tube amps along with triangle, square, pulse, rising and falling sawtooth waveforms to recreate a “Leslie” rotating speaker swirl through to more intense swampy tremolo effects. This pedal is designed to give players easy access to classic rock ‘n’ roll, blues and surf tremolo tones with outstanding warmth and hi-fidelity.

FEATURES

  • 100% Tube Signal path Vacuum tubes and photo-resistors are utilised to create the tremolo effect. Custom photo-cells ensure absolute minimum harmonic distortion for an exceptionally pure tremolo tone.
  • Powerful Mixed-Wave Modulator Advanced L.F.O. technology allows continuous control of many waveforms. Standard mode reproduces smoothed triangle (linear) to sine and pseudo-square with all the wave variations between to recreate a range of authentic tube amp tremolo tones. The pedal can be further configured to produce variations of rising and falling sawtooth waves, for “Leslie style” acceleration effects. The Delta-Trem is unique that all waveforms have rounded edges for a sweet and musical tremolo – very usable and quiet operation.
  • Twin L.F.O. Operation In standard mode the signal is ping-ponged between left and right outputs. The Delta-Trem can also be configured so that the “Depth” knob operates as an independent L.F.O. control. This creates some unique amplitude modulation effects as the channels drift in and out of phase.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago 1510 knobs custom manufactured for Effectrode in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds.
  • Turquoise LEDs pulsate with modulation speed for visual song tempo matching.

Effectrode Mercury Tube Fuzz

“Lovely fat creamy fuzz sound with plenty of sustain and harmonic content.” – Guitarist Magazine

DESCRIPTION

This beautiful little pedal is built on a vintage, hand selected, space grade pencil tubeand N.O.S. germanium point-contact crystal diodes – there’s a lot of glass in this pedal! This combination of hot biased and cold-biased tube gain stages with crystal diode clipping circuitry blends thermionic (asymmetrical) and solid-state (symmetrical) distortions to generate beautiful fuzzed guitar tones. At full throttle this little pedal can generate outrageous ‘blocking-distortion’ which sounds like a tube amp being pushed beyond it’s limits. Rolling back the ‘Fuzz’ control creates an immense, bold fuzz tone with endless amounts of smooth liquid sustain that stretches notes into infinity. At lower fuzz settings the MERCURY cleans up to produce natural sounding (real!) tube dirt and overdrive with unprecedented clarity and string-to-string definition. It’s an incredibly simple, yet versatile pedal.

Subminiature (or pencil) tubes were developed during World War II for missile control and therefore had to be exceptionally tough devices. These tubes were manufactured to meet the stringent MIL-E-1 specification for reliability and designed for long service life under conditions of severe shock, vibration (20,000G!), high temperature and high altitude. The subminiature tubes represent the pinnacle of tube technology and offer more consistent musical performance than the early transistors. Effectrode is now utilising these little tubes for peaceful purposes – to create extremely compact and tough little effects pedals!

Note: This is a limited edition pedal. Due to the limited availability of high quality N.O.S. tubes, we cannot guarantee continued production of this pedal for any amount of time.

FEATURES

  • _100% pure analogue vacuum tube audio path operating at amp plate voltages_
  • Fuzz Flexibility: Stacks of fuzz sounds from devastating over-the-top tube amp ‘blocking distortion’, to classic 70s Page and Clapton fuzz – the fuzz cleans-up very nicely when the guitar volume knob is rolled back to produce warm, tubey drive tones.
  • ‘HEAT’ Switch: Allows the second tube stage to be operated at reduced plate voltage (starvation) to generate a wide range of ‘tubey’ fuzz tones.
  • Crystal Diodes: A unique cascaded arrangement of vintage germanium crystal diodes gives the MERCURY more dynamic range and a rich, complex tone.
  • True Bypass: With Effectrode’s unique ‘anti-pop’ or ‘thump’ footswitching circuitry Fitted with N.O.S Sylvania tube: Each MERCURY fuzz pedal is fitted with a N.O.S. Sylvania hand-selected 6112 subminiature tube. This is one of the finest tubes ever built by any manufacturer at any time in history.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago 1510 knobs custom manufactured for Effectrode in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds.
  • Includes 12V Wall-wart Power Supply: High quality low-noise switched mode 12VDC at 1.5A wall-wart compatible with all our pedals. Accepts 100V to 240VAC mains input and comes with different mains outlet adaptor plugs, so there is always a plug that fits the country that you are playing in.
  • John Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth in 1962 putting the Americans ahead of the Russians in the space race for the first time. The Effectrode Mercury fuzz pedal is named after the space vehicle, or capsule, in which he made 3 orbits of the Earth and is our tribute to the fantastic achievement of Glenn and all those involved at NASA.

Effectrode Fire Bottle Tube Boost

“An instant supply of increased Fender twang!” – Guitarist Magazine

DESCRIPTION

This compact, all-tube booster pedal has a warm and musical personality and is way more toneful and responsive than opamp or transistor boost/drive stompboxes. It’s essentially a vintage tube amplifier input stage in a pedal that works as a clean boost on lower gain settings or, when running at full-tilt, push your tube amp into beautiful overdrive. It can add some warmth and growl to thicken up your tone without losing definition and clarity.

This pedal is specially designed to work with magnetic guitar pickups and is based on a N.O.S. (new old stock) Sylvania subminiature 6112 vacuum tube operating at true tube amplifier plate voltages. If you’re seeking a flexible boost pedal with a richer tone than germanium or silicon boost pedals then the Fire Bottle is the solution!

The 6112 is manufactured to meet the stringent MIL-E-1 specification for reliability and designed for long service life under conditions of severe shock, vibration (20,000G!), high temperature and high altitude. The subminiature tubes represent the pinnacle of tube technology and offer exceptional musical performance and reliability making this the perfect boost pedal for studio and touring in even the harshest conditions. Like all Effectrode tube pedals, the Fire Bottle is true bypass for uncoloured feed-through.

Note: This is a limited edition pedal. Due to the limited availability of high quality N.O.S. tubes we cannot guarantee continued production of this pedal any amount of time.

FEATURES

  • _100% analogue tube signal path based on a vintage N.O.S. Mil-spec subminiature 6112 tube with black plates (operating at amp plate voltages). Each tube is burned in for 24 hours and each Fire Bottle pedal tested and hand assembled by the designer to make sure it is perfect_

Effectrode Tube Drive Overdrive

“…the Tube Drive produces the sort of high quality, beautifully balanced tones that pro rigs are built on.” – Guitarist Magazine

Description

The Tube Drive™ contains Threedual triode tubes operating at 300VDC and biased to produce extremely symmetrical signal clipping across 6 cascaded gain stages. In practice this means the pedal responds empathically to pick attack with a smooth and graceful breakup characteristic on low drive settings, producing an expressive warm blues tone.

Increasing the drive introduces rich and musical harmonic overtones that pack serious punch for a larger-than-life, “hot-rodded” amp tone. The tone quality of the Tube Drive exceptionally musical, organic and sounds distinctly different to pushing an amp with a solid-state diode clipping or even hybrid opamp/tube overdrive pedal and it won’t mask the natural sound of your guitar and amplifier.

FEATURES

  • All Tube gain circuitry: The Tube Drive is the only pedal you can buy that has a complete tube guitar preamp inside – 100% analogue, class-A, all-tube means no silicon in the signal path and it operates at real amp plate voltages (300VDC!). This topology gives the Tube Drive fine control over a wide range of gain characteristics from mild breakup to creamy saturation.
  • Tube swapping: The tone and gain characteristics of the Tube Drive can be drastically altered by interchanging tubes – in fact the pedal is designed for easy access to the tubes for this purpose. It can be quickly and easily transformed into a hi-gain distortion beast, mellow blues driver or boost pedal by simply removing a tube and replacing it with a different type. For example, swapping out the 12AX7 tube in the top right hand position for a lower Mμ 12AY7 or 12AV7 will alter the pedal’s gain and tonal characteristics so that is becomes more full-bodied and bluesy sounding.
  • Bax-Stack “active” tube tone control: The Tube Drive is the only overdrive with an active tube tone control. The Bax-Stack is a real treble boost (and cut) circuit with zero insertion loss, unlike passive tone stacks which can only remove frequency content (“tone-sucking”). The tone range is optimised to work over important frequencies essential for mellow jazz tones to some serious crunch.
  • Low-end contour switch: Active low boost for a warmer, richer sound. Especially useful with single coil pickups to thicken the sound or when playing at low volumes to compensate for loudness. The Tube Drive is also the perfect tonic in today’s digital world where guitar tones can sound flat and one-dimensional.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago knobs manufactured in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds!
  • Daylight visible orange L.E.D.: Indicates when pedal is engaged.

Effectrode Tube-Vibe

“…two of the best sounding stompboxes [Tube-Vibe & Phaseomatic] we’ve ever heard.” – Guitarist Magazine

Description

The pre-amp, mixer and phase-shifters sections are built on triode tubes operating at real amp plate voltages and it has a powerful L.F.O. that makes it possible to sculpt thick, swampy vibe tones at higher modulation rates through to textural & spacious chorus effects at slower rates. The tone is outrageously cool – it’s absolutely the lushest, most psychedelic sounding guitar pedal there is! One of those devices that epitomise analogue with it’s unique, slightly blurry, liquid phase-chorused tone, impossible to simulate.

FEATURES

  • All Tube: Circuitry for the ultimate in audiophile performance! – low background noise and stacks of headroom. The Tube-Vibe takes single coil or humbucker pickups extremely well – the pedal ships with a 12AU7 tube in its input stage so has ample headroom for stunning, clean Vibe tones. However, the 12AU7 can be swapped out for other 9-pin varieties with a higher gain factor such as 12AY7 or 12AX7 to create more of a Leslie-style growl or push your favourite vintage/boutique tube amp into overdrive for some seriously thick/sustaining tones.
  • Dual LFOs: In ‘Classic’ mode the Tube-Vibe authentically sculpts the deep, swampy Uni-Vibe throb and in ‘Smooth’ mode it reproduces dreamy, ethereal chorus voicings. Additionally, the LFO can be halted (frozen) so it can work as a sweepable notch filter to create hollow sounding scooped textures.
  • Chorus/Vibrato Switch: Selects between the classic Hendrix/Trower Uni-Vibe chorus and de-tuning pitch-bend vibrato. Additionally, the internal ‘Blend’ trimmer allows further fine-tuning of the vibe throb.
  • High, one megaohm input impedance: Ensures a wide open and clear tone – your guitar pickup is “seeing” a tube amp input stage. The input resistance of the Uni-Vibe is only 69Kohm which is low enough to load the output of a guitar and dull the sound or cause significant treble loss to single coil pickups.
  • True Bypass Switching: With Effectrode’s unique ‘anti-pop’ or ‘thump’ footswitching circuitry utilising sealed, gold-contact relay to eliminate the possibility of dirty contacts degrading the sound and minimal internal audio path.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago knobs manufactured in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds!
  • Pulsates with modulation speed for visual song tempo matching
  • Includes 12V Wall-wart Power Supply: High quality low-noise switched mode 12VDC at 1.5A wall-wart compatible with all our pedals. Accepts 100V to 240VAC mains input and comes with different mains outlet adaptor plugs, so there is always a plug that fits the country that you are playing in.

Effectrode Glass-A Triode Buffer

Description

The Glass-A buffers the pickup from cables and effect pedals input stages to prevent ‘loading’ which dulls and degrades the instrument’s tone.

High voltage tube circuitry coupled with audiophile passive components makes the Glass-A a sonic dream! Its frequency response is flat from 5Hz to over 100KHz with a shallow roll-off to maintain low phase distortion. The wide linear region of a tube operating at 300V means this buffer can handle signal levels of over 50V P-P and its parallel cathode follower circuitry ensures whisper quiet operation and superb line-drive capability. The Glass-A will effortlessly handle active 5-string bass guitars, NS Stick and even ‘difficult’ instruments with fast transients such as lutes, harpsichords and hammered dulcimers to reveal more detail and improve the depth and clarity and of these instruments.

Audiophile grade components are used throughout the circuitry, polyester coupling capacitors, precision resistors (with silver/palladium contacts) and Sylvania N.O.S. Effectrode Blackbird Vacuum Tube Preamp

If distortion can be described as ‘beautiful’, this is it.” – The ToneQuest Report

Description

The Blackbird™ is a genuine all-tube preamp in a pedal! This tube tone engine is specially designed to give guitarists access to a wide palette of exceptionally classy guitar sounds whether recording direct to computer in the studio or when used with a tube amp in a live situation.

The tone of the drive channel is best described as “Bourbon & honey”, being voiced for a full-bodied, warm, bluesy overdrive. As the gain knob is rolled-up the overdrive fattens up beautifully to become a rich distortion full of depth and even harmonic overtones. The gain channel also features a second, entirely different voicing (“Creamy” mode) which hot biases the tube circuitry, adding more odd harmonics to thicken up the soup for some devastating classic rock, crunch and creamy, harmonically-saturated guitar sounds. This channel utilises exactly the same dynamic and touch sensitive all-tube clipping circuitry found only in an elite few hi-end guitar amps. By simply digging in or easing off with the guitar pick the tube circuitry responds musically and works with you to create soaring expressive solos and its natural tube compression means you can effortlessly transition into rhythm or chord playing.

The clean channel has a beautiful, open and glassy musical tone that lends itself to country and jazz playing, however, because it’s a replica of the ‘Blackface’ tube circuit, it too can be pushed into breakup and overdrive with higher output pickups or a booster pedal. A huge engineering effort has gone into developing and refining the thermionic circuitry in Blackbird and as a result of this the tone and feel of the pedal is superbly balanced – guitar tone really does not get any better than this. Again, this channel has great depth, clarity and richness – a polished, classy sound that tubes excel at.

The Blackbird can be further ‘tweaked’ (a formal engineering term) to allow players sculpt their own truly unique signature sounds. The character of the overdrive response can be altered by adjusting tube bias points and swapping out tubes giving access to a virtually unlimited range of classic and undiscovered tube preamp voicings. It’s great fun – finding bargain tubes and experimenting. In the time it takes to change a light bulb tubes can be swapped out for N.O.S.(new old stock) vintage types such as Mullard, RCA, Tung-Sol, etc altering the gain, biting point, feel and fundamental tone of the Blackbird.

FEATURES

  • Two Truly Independent Channels: Add multiple channels to your vintage/boutique guitar amp! The clean channel is a replica of the classic ‘Blackface’ circuit Leo Fender created from the RCA Receiving Tube Manual and is beautifully warm and glassy sounding. The overdrive channel is an improvement on the hot-rodded tube circuitry found in Dumble amps and packs a huge degree of flexibility ranging from warm and fat blues drive tones, through classic rock crunch, to harmonically-saturated sounds.
  • Classic Tone Stacks: Each channel has it’s own dedicated Bass, Mid and Treble controls based on the interactive tonestacks found on the ‘Blackface’ amps.
  • Tube Buffered Output: For connection to guitar amplifier. This output is a low impedance tube cathode follower stage with +10dBu of gain and is capable of driving long cable runs with lowest possible tone loss.
  • Transformer Balanced Out: For superb professional quality direct recording. Triad transformer isolated balanced output (600Ω impedance) with +6dBu gain allowing direct connection to mixing desk, PC sound capture card or power amplifier. The transformer is driven by audiophile discrete class AB transistor circuitry (the only solid-state components in the entire signal path) and imparts some additional sweetness to the guitar signal – in fact, speaker emulation often isn’t even necessary when recording direct, just a some eq and a little reverb can create incredible, full-bodied tones.
  • Adjustable Bias: Internal bias trim-pot allows bias adjustment of the first gain stage of the drive channel to alter the input sensitivity, biting point and ‘feel’ of the Blackbird. Rotating the trim-pot clockwise increases the bias voltage, ‘hot’ biasing the tube stage and rotating anti-clockwise ‘cold’ biases the tube.
  • Tube swapping: Swapping tubes allows the fundamental character of the drive channel to be altered to replicate a wide range of vintage guitar amps and create new sounds too. The tone and gain characteristics of the Blackbird pedal can be fine-tuned by substituting the stock 12AX7 with other B9A types, such as 12AY7, 12AV7 or 12AU7 tubes. The pedal is designed for easy access to the tubes for this purpose. In the time it takes to change a light-bulb the core tone of the overdrive channel can be tailored to your exact requirements – from subtle break-up, to mellow blues and vintage or saturated modern rock distortion, this pedal has wide versatility and all by simply removing a tube and replacing it with a different type.
  • All Tube: The Blackbird is an entire tube preamp section in a pedal format. The signal path is 100% pure analogue built with vacuum tubes operating at amp plate voltages. D.C. powered tube heaters ensure absolute quietest possible operation.
  • Audiophile Components: Absolutely no skimping on the quality of the components – polyester capacitors and instrumentation grade metal-film resistors are used throughout the audio signal path. Find out more about the Effectrode engineering ethos on component quality
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago 1510 knobs custom manufactured for Effectrode in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds.
  • Extremely compact: The Blackbird is small enough to carry in a gig bag with your cables, tuner and other tools of the trade. You’ll be sure of unparalleled tone wherever you roam and it makes a great backup as a spare rig. No guitarist should leave home (or be at home!) without it!
  • Housed in a real metal box: The Blackbird is built to last and for rigorous touring – each preamp pedal is housed in an aluminium alloy enclosure which powder-coated with a stoved epoxy silkscreen.
  • True Bypass Switching: With Effectrode’s unique ‘anti-pop’ or ‘thump’ footswitching circuitry utilising sealed, gold-contact relay to eliminate the possibility of dirty contacts degrading the sound and minimal internal audio path.
  • Includes 12V Wall-wart Power Supply: High quality low-noise switched mode 12VDC at 1.5A wall-wart compatible with all our pedals.
  • Accepts 100V to 240VAC mains input and comes with different mains outlet adaptor plugs, so there is always a plug that fits the country that you are playing in.
  • Named after the coolest plane ever built!: The Blackbird SR-71 operated at Mach3+ to allow the pilot to outrun ground-to-air missiles! Like it’s counterpart the Blackbird vacuum tube preamp puts you in control of your core drive sound.

Effectrode Leveling Amplifier

The Effectrode LA-1A is a formidable piece of guitar and bass hardware” – Vintage Guitar

Description

The Effectrode LA-1A Leveling Amplifier was designed with one purpose in mind: to enable artists and engineers extract every last nuance from a musical performance… without compromise. Tubes are renowned for being unparalleled tone enhancers, adding warmth, depth and clarity to recorded and live instruments and Effectrode wanted to push their performance beyond current limits. To that end we based our LA-1A on a parallel tube plate design – the type of tube circuitry only ever found in high-end tube phono preamp stages for turntables (remember those?).

Parallel tube design minimises the noise floor and maximises the signal to noise ratio of your instrument. It’s an expensive way of achieving noise
reduction, as four identical input tube stages are required, however it yields stellar tone quality without the compromise of noise gates or ‘cutting’ certain frequencies with equalisation. The parallel tube design has never been built into a stompbox or even a professional studio leveling amplifier/compressor before, making the LA-1A something truely special.

FEATURES

  • Peak Reduction knob sets both the threshold and the amount of signal compression. When adjusting the compression or sustain a good starting point is the 9 o’clock position where subtle leveling enhances note detail, creating a fuller , warmer tone. As the knob is rotated clockwise the volume level of loud notes is reduced relative to quieter ones, squashing playing dynamics – this is the definitive sound of many country and funk-style guitar riffs.
  • Gain knob adjusts the ‘make-up gain’ and is used to match the relative levels of bypassed and effected signal. It can also provide +15dBu of tube boost when the ‘Peak Reduction’ knob fully counterclockwise (zero compresson).
  • Boost knob gives an additional +6dB of gain (on top of the make up gain) – this is useful when soloing on guitar or bass and can push the input stage of a tube amp into overdrive very nicely too. The ‘Boost’ footswitch engages (red LED lit) and bypasses (green LED lit) the boost.
  • Attack and Knee knobs allow the compression character to be tailored perfectly to suit instruments that are challenging to amplify or record. For
example, active 5-string bass guitars, nylon and steel string acoustic guitars fitted with piezo pickups and even especially ‘difficult’ stringed instruments such as hammered dulcimer , harpsichord or tar . Rotating the ‘Attack’ knob clockwise increases how fast the side-chain reacts, i.e. the speed at which compression kicks in. The ‘Knee’ knob alters the input/output curve, i.e. how the LA-1A transitions into compression – rotate clockwise and the LA-1A becomes a limiter and counter-clockwise for compression.
  • When the Dynamic EQ toggle switch is in the ‘down’ position the LA-1A dynamically boosts high frequency material. With the ‘Peak Reduction’ knob fully counter-clockwise (zero compression) dynamic eq is inactive, however as the knob is rotated clockwise, and the pedal begins compressing, the effect becomes increasingly pronounced. Fabulous for jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar sounds.
  • Bypass Footswitch utilises quiet true bypass switching to minimse ‘pops’ or ‘thump’ when engaging the pedal and ensure there is no loss of
guitar tone when the pedal is bypassed.
  • Balanced Direct Out ¼” TRS (stereo) jack socket allows connection of the LA-1A to mixing desk, computer soundcard or external audio capture
device. This output is fully balanced and transformer isolated, eliminating earth loops and reducing hum to an absolute minimum and features a gain pad (+6dB, +12dB and +18dB) to facilitate matching with any line or instrument level gear . The Triad Magnetics audio transformer also imparts it’s own character to enhance and sweeten the direct sound.
  • External Select ¼” TRS (stereo) jack socket. This enables an external footswitch, such as the Fender® ‘Twin Reverb’ Amp tremolo/reverb dual latching footswitch), to be utilised for remote bypass switching and activating the tube boost.
  • Includes 12V Wall-wart Power Supply: High quality low-noise switched mode 12VDC at 1.5A wall-wart compatible with all our pedals.

Effectrode PC-2A Tube Compressor

“Aural velvet.” – Vintage Guitar Magazine

Description

The PC-2A is a true vintage studio compressor in a stompbox—there are no VCA chips, opamps or budget components in the signal path which is 100% analogue and built on a hand selected photo-cell, polyester coupling capacitors, precision resistors (with silver/palladium contacts) and SylvaniaN.O.S. (new old stock) 6111 subminiature tube operating at real amp plate voltages all on a special silver-plated printed circuit board.

The tube circuitry delivers stacks of head-room and very, very low noise floor for outstanding dynamics, preserving the attack characteristics while creating musical and natural compression—the PC-2A wraps your signal in velvet, enhancing your guitar tone without stamping a solid-state signature on it. Useful in live situations for adding ‘punch’ or fattening up thin single coil pickups and indispensable when recording direct to digital audio workstations (computer) to prevent nasty transient distortion artifacts that modern digital recording devices produce if overloaded. Acoustic players will also appreciate the smoothness and sustain the PC-2A will add to amplified acoustic guitar, especially those fitted with piezo pickups.

The tube is manufactured to meet the stringent MIL-E-1 specification for reliability and designed for long service life under conditions of severe shock, vibration (20,000G!), high temperature and high altitude. The subminiature tubes represent the absolute pinnacle of tube technology and offer exceptional musical performance and reliability making this the perfect compressor pedal for studio and touring in even the harshest conditions. Like my other subminiature tube pedals, the PC-2A is true bypass for uncoloured feed-through.

Note: This is a limited edition pedal. Due to the limited availability of high quality N.O.S. tubes, we cannot guarantee continued production of this pedal for any amount of time.

FEATURES

  • All Tube: 100% pure analogue vacuum tube audio path operating at amp plate voltages ensures the PC-2A compressor has huge headroom and very quiet, natural sound reproduction. Each tube is burned in for 24 hours and each PC-2A compressor pedal tested and hand assembled by the designer to make sure it is perfect.
  • Limit/Compress Switch: Select between two completely different compression curves. ‘Compress’ mode is a light, subtle compression that can be used to enhance tone and even out string dynamics – the tube and photo-cell yields beautifully natural and musical tone. ‘Limit’ mode is heavier for a punchier, ‘squished’ country tone.
  • Internal Attack and Knee controls: To allow bass players with high output/active pick-ups to adjust the compression response characteristic to tailor it to their needs. This little tube compressor performs exceptionally well with electric, active bass, 12-string and acoustic guitars – you really don’t need a separate dedicated bass compressor. You can find more information on how to adjust the ‘knee’ and ‘attack’ trimpots here.
  • ‘Proper’ side-chain: A-weighted pre-emphasis in the side-chain replicates the response of the human ear and allows for heavy compression without the excessive ‘pumping’ normally associated with compressors processing low-frequency material. Because the control side-chain circuitry is much less sensitive to low frequencies the PC-2A maintains a transparent low-end response making it an invaluable tool for taming mid-frequency transients caused by slapping or pulling strings on bass or NS stick.
  • Photo-optical gain control: The gain control attenuator is based on a resistive photocell which ensures the absolute minimum of distortion is introduced (much lower than V.C.A. and F.E.T. designs). Additionally, the natural decay characteristic of the photocell produces a smooth release characteristic which always sounds pleasing and natural to the ear.
  • Works as a tube boost pedal!: The gain is about 15dBu maximum with the ‘Peak Reduction’ knob fully anticlockwise and the ‘Gain’ knob fully clockwise. This is enough to push a Fender ‘Tweed’ or ‘Deluxe’ amp into breakup and overdrive territory.
  • True Bypass Switching: With Effectrode’s unique ‘anti-pop’ or ‘thump’ footswitching circuitry utilising sealed, gold-contact relay to eliminate the possibility of dirty contacts degrading the sound and minimal internal audio path.
  • Dakaware Knobs: Authentic phenolic Dakaware, Chicago 1510 knobs custom manufactured for Effectrode in the U.S.A using the original 1940s moulds.
  • Fitted with N.O.S Sylvania tube: Each PC-2A compressor is fitted with a hand-selected 6111 subminiature tube. This is one of the finest tubes ever built by any manufacturer at any time in history.
